Application

The IM 174 PROFIBUS module permits the connection of up to 4 drives to motion controls via the isochronous PROFIBUS DP. Both electrical and hydraulic drives or stepper drives with analog setpoint interface or pulse-direction interface can be connected. The IM 174 is a PROFIBUS DP slave for operation on the isochronous PROFIBUS DP.

Design

The following interfaces and status displays are available:

  • Connection to isochronous PROFIBUS (max. 12 Mbit/s)
  • 4 encoder inputs for position acquisition Each input can be connected either to an RS422 incremental encoder or to an SSI absolute value encoder.
  • 4 analog outputs ±10 V for connecting drives with analog setpoint interface
  • 4 interfaces for controlling stepper drives with or without encoder connection
  • 10 DI, 24 V DC (e.g. for reference point approach, controller ready signal)
  • 8 DO, 24 V DC, 0.5 A (e.g. for drive enable)
  • 2 relay contacts for ready signal
  • 4 relay contacts for drive enable of axes 1 to 4
  • Onboard status display on 4 diagnostics LEDs

All connections are at the front panel.

An external power source (24 V DC) is required for supplying the module and the digital outputs.

The actual values (encoder values) of the drives are transferred from the IM 174 to the motion control vai PROFIBUS DP. The position controller of the control unit calculates the speed setpoint. This value is transferred to the IM 174 via PROFIBUS DP and then output to the drives.
